Shri Surya Ashtakam Stotram

Shri Surya Ashtakam Stotram is an 8-verse devotional hymn dedicated to Lord Surya (The Sun God), found in the Samba Purana and Bhavishya Purana.

In Sanatana Dharma, Lord Surya is worshipped as the direct visible God (Pratyaksha Devata) and the supreme source of light, heat, life, and health. The legend states that Samba (son of Lord Krishna) was cured of leprosy by worshipping Lord Surya using these solar prayers.

Each verse praises Lord Surya's 7-horse chariot, lotus eyes, red complexion, and cosmic power to destroy disease, poverty, and darkness. Each verse concludes with the reverent refrain: "Devadeva Namostute" or "Bhāskara Namostute" ("Salutations to You, O Lord of Gods! Salutations to You, O Bhaskara!").

Spiritual Significance

Surya Ashtakam praises the Sun God as Trinity:

1. Brahma-Vishnu-Maheshwara Form: Verse 4 proclaims that Surya is the physical manifestation of Brahma (creation), Vishnu (sustenance), and Shiva (dissolution).
2. : Praises Surya's 7-horse chariot (), representing the 7 days of the week and 7 colors of sunlight.

According to scriptural tradition and verse 9 of this stotram, daily recitation of Shri Surya Ashtakam grants the following blessings:

• Eradication of All Diseases and Skin Illnesses (Arogya Prada): Cures skin disorders, leprosy, fever, and bodily weakness.
• Protection and Sharpness of Eyesight (Netra Roga Hara): Enhances vision and cures eye diseases.
• Freedom from Poverty and Financial Hardship: Bestows agricultural wealth, prosperity, and domestic joy.
• Destruction of Sins of Seven Lifetimes: Cleanses karmic impurities accumulated over seven past births.

Meaning of Phalashruti

Whoever recites this Surya Ashtakam daily with focused faith will be delivered from all diseases (Sarva-Roga-Vinirmuktah), blessed with children and grain abundance. Sins committed across seven past lifetimes are destroyed in an instant, and they reach Suryaloka.

1. When should Surya Ashtakam be chanted?

Sundays during sunrise, Ratha Saptami, and daily morning prayers.

2. How should water offering (Arghya) be given to the Sun?

Stand facing East, hold a copper vessel filled with water, red flowers, and rice grains, and pour water slowly while looking towards the rising Sun.
