Shri Subramanya Bhujangam

Shri Subramanya Bhujangam is a 33-verse poetic and spiritual masterpiece composed by Sri Adi Shankaracharya in praise of Lord Subramanya (Lord Murugan / Kartikeya), composed in the majestic Bhujangaprayata (Serpent) poetic meter.

Legend states that when Shankaracharya suffered from a severe abdominal ailment (Abhichara/Shoola disease) induced by rival Tantrics, Lord Subramanya appeared in a vision and instructed him to visit the holy seashore shrine of Tiruchendur in Tamil Nadu. Standing before Lord Murugan, Shankaracharya saw Adishesha (the divine serpent) spreading his hoods over Lord Subramanya, and spontaneously sang these 33 verses flowing like a undulating serpent (Bhujanga). Shankaracharya was instantly cured of his illness!

Each verse praises Lord Murugan's six faces (Shanmukha), Vel weapon, peacock mount, sea-breeze shrine at Tiruchendur, and His supreme power to cure incurable diseases.

• Verse 1: Invocation to Lord Ganesha, elder brother of Subramanya.
• Verse 2: I know no grammar or poetry, yet when 6-faced Murugan shines in my heart, divine words flow!
• Verse 3: I worship Kartikeya, mounted on peacock, hidden essence of Upanishadic Mahavakyas.
• Verses 4–32: Describing Murugan's Tripundra mark, Vel weapon, Tiruchendur sea breeze, and power to destroy disease.
• Verse 33 (Phalashruti): Reciting with devotion grants fulfillment of desires and Subramanya Padam.
