Shri Purusha Suktam

Shri Purusha Suktam (Rigveda 10.90) is the most celebrated, foundational, and sublime Vedic hymn in Sanatana Dharma. Revealed to Rishi Narayana, it occurs in all four Vedas (Rigveda, Shukla & Krishna Yajurveda, Samaveda, Atharvaveda).

The Suktam describes the Purusha—the thousand-headed, thousand-eyed, thousand-footed Cosmic Being who pervades the entire universe, filling all creation while extending ten fingers' breadth beyond it (Atyatiṣṭhad-Daśāṅgulam).

It details the cosmic sacrifice (Yajna) through which the Sun, Moon, seasons, Vedas, animal life, and human society originated from different parts of the Cosmic Purusha.

• Mantra 1: Purusha has 1000 heads, 1000 eyes, 1000 feet; enveloping the earth, He extends 10 fingers beyond.
• Mantra 2: Purusha is all this—whatever was in the past and whatever will be in the future; Lord of immortality.
• Mantras 3–15: Describing cosmic Yajna, creation of Sun (from eye), Moon (from mind), Indra/Agni (from mouth), Vayu (from breath).
• Mantra 16 (Phalashruti): Gods worshipped through sacrifice; those who know this reach the supreme spiritual sky.

Spiritual Significance

Purusha Suktam is the pinnacle of Vedic cosmology:

1. Sahasrasirsa: Describes the Cosmic Being with 1000 heads, eyes, and feet.
2. One-Fourth & Three-Fourths: 1/4th of Purusha forms the physical manifest universe; 3/4ths remain unmanifest in the immortal spiritual sky (Tripad-Asyamritam Divi).

According to scriptural declaration in Vedic tradition, daily chanting of Shri Purusha Suktam grants the highest spiritual and material blessings:

• Eradication of All Sins and Karmic Obstacles: Cleanses sins of mind, speech, and action.
• Attainment of Universal Harmony and Health: Brings physical vitality, peace, and domestic joy.
• Full Fruit of Temple Worship and Yajna: Recited during deity Abhishekam to invoke divine presence.
• Attainment of Liberation (Moksha): Grants Self-realization and eternal residence in Narayana's supreme abode.

Whoever recites or listens to this Shri Purusha Suktam with pure devotion is freed from all sins, attains prosperity, long life, and reaches the supreme realm (Naka) where the ancient gods and liberated souls reside.

During morning Sandhya, Vishnu Abhishekam, Satyanarayana Vratam, and daily temple rituals.
