Shri Panchamukha Hanuman Kavacham

Shri Panchamukha Hanuman Kavacham (literally meaning "The Armor of Five-Faced Lord Hanuman") is a supreme Tantric protective hymn found in the Sudarsana Samhita.

Lord Hanuman assumed the colossal Panchamukha (Five-Faced) form in Pātāla Loka to slay the demon king Ahiravana (Mahiravana). Ahiravana had kept five divine lamps burning in five different directions, and could only be killed if all five lamps were extinguished simultaneously. Hanuman manifested five faces in five directions to blow out all five lamps at once and rescue Rama and Lakshmana.

The five faces represent five divine Avatars of Sriman Narayana:

1. East Face: Sri Hanuman (Grants purity of mind and destroys sins).
2. South Face: Sri Narasimha (Grants fearlessness and destroys enemies).
3. West Face: Sri Garuda (Destroys poisons, snakebites, and evil spirits).
4. North Face: Sri Varaha (Grants wealth, land, and destroys planetary afflictions).
5. Upward Face: Sri Hayagriva (Grants supreme knowledge, wisdom, and speech).
