Shri Kanakadhara Stotram

Shri Kanakadhara Stotram (literally meaning "Hymn of the Shower of Gold") is one of the most famous and compassionate compositions by Sri Adi Shankaracharya.

The miracle behind this stotram is inspiring. As a young Brahmachari boy, Shankaracharya went to a poor woman's house seeking alms (Bhiksha). The impoverished woman searched her entire house and found only a single dry Amla fruit (Gooseberry). With tears of devotion, she offered that last fruit to the young saint.

Moved by her selfless heart, Shankaracharya instantly composed these 21 sublime verses praising Goddess Mahalakshmi, imploring Her glance of grace to fall upon the poor home. Pleased by Shankara's poetry and the woman's devotion, Mother Lakshmi rained golden Amla fruits (Kanakadhara) into the poor household, banishing her poverty forever.

Reciting the Kanakadhara Stotram with faith removes poverty, financial debts, and bestows eternal prosperity and peace.

• Verse 1: May the auspicious side-glance of Mother Lakshmi, which rests on Vishnu like a black bee on mango blossoms, grant me good fortune.
• Verse 2: May the glances of ocean-born Lakshmi, moving between love and bashfulness on Murari's face, bestow wealth upon me.
• Verses 3–15: Describing Lakshmi's lotus eyes, Her residence on Vishnu's chest, Her golden luster, and Her power as Kamadhenu (wish-fulfilling cow).
• Verses 16–20: Salutations to Lakshmi as Kamala, Padma, Vaikuntha-Priya, and praying for Her merciful glance on poor devotees.
• Verse 21 (Phalashruti): Reciting Kanakadhara Stotram thrice daily grants wealth equal to Kubera.
