Shri Totakashtakam Stotram
Introduction
Shri Totakashtakam Stotram is an 8-verse devotional hymn composed by Sri Totakacharya (originally named Giri), one of the four direct chief disciples of Sri Adi Shankaracharya.
Legend relates that Giri was considered simple-minded by other disciples because he devoted all his time to washing Shankaracharya's clothes and serving his Guru physically rather than studying scriptures. One day, while waiting for Giri to return from the river, Shankaracharya blessed Giri with instant Atma-Jnana (Self-realization) and mastery over all scriptures. Giri returned spontaneously singing these 8 complex, highly poetic verses in the Totaka poetic meter!
Each verse praises Shankaracharya's ocean-like scriptural wisdom, mercy towards dull disciples, and Advaita realization. Each verse concludes with the iconic refrain: "Bhava Śaṅkara Deśika Me Śaraṇam" ("O Master Shankara, be my sole refuge!").
