Shri Rudrashtakam / Shri Rudram (Namakam)
Introduction
Shri Rudram (Namakam) (popularly known as Rudra Prashna) is the central pillar of Vedic literature dedicated to Lord Shiva. It occurs in the 4th Kanda, 5th Prapathaka of the Krishna Yajurveda Taittiriya Samhita.
The hymn is named Namakam because almost every verse contains the sacred word "Namo" ("Salutations"), offering reverent bows to Lord Shiva in all His infinite forms—both manifest and unmanifest, peaceful and fierce, cosmic and microscopic.
The Shri Rudram consists of 11 Anuvakas (chapters). It contains the holiest of all mantras in Sanatana Dharma: the Panchakshari Mantra (Om Namah Shivaya) in the 8th Anuvaka, and the Maha Mrityunjaya Mantra at its conclusion.
Benefits of Recitation (Phalashruti)
According to scriptural declaration in Vedic tradition, daily chanting or listening to Shri Rudram (Namakam) bestows extraordinary spiritual and material blessings:
- Eradication of All Sins and Karma: Cleanses sins of past lives and removes karmic obstructions.
- Grant of Health and Longevity (Arogya and Ayush): Cures physical illnesses and grants protection from untimely death.
- Pacification of Planetary Malefics: Neutralizes negative impacts of Shani, Rahu, Ketu, and all planets.
