Shri Rama Mangalashasanam
Introduction
Shri Rama Mangalashasanam (popularly known by its iconic opening line Maṅgalaṃ Kosalendrāya) is a deeply sacred 10-verse auspicious hymn composed by Sri Varavara Muni (Manavala Mamunigal), one of the supreme preceptors of the Sri Vaishnava tradition.
Mangalashasanam means "Praying for auspiciousness and divine victory unto the Lord". In this hymn, the saint invokes eternal glory, victory, and auspiciousness (Mangalam) upon Lord Ramachandra of Ayodhya, praising His cosmic qualities, His slaying of demons, His love for Mother Sita, and His eternal reign of Dharma.
Each verse concludes with the iconic refrain: "Maṅgalaṃ Kosalendrāya Mahanīya-Guṇābdhaye | Cakravarti-Tanūjāya Sārvabhaumāya Maṅgalam" ("Auspiciousness unto the Prince of Kosala, the ocean of magnificent virtues, the son of Emperor Dasaratha, the sovereign ruler of all creation!").
