Shri Narayana Kavacham
Introduction
Shri Narayana Kavacham (literally meaning "The Armor of Lord Narayana") is one of the most powerful and sacred protective shields found in Srimad Bhagavatam (Canto 6, Chapter 8), compiled by Maharshi Veda Vyasa.
The context of this stotram is monumental. When the demons (Asuras) defeated King Indra and the demigods (Devas), Indra sought refuge with the learned preceptor Vishvarupa (son of Tvashta). Vishvarupa imparted this divine Narayana Kavacha armor to Indra. Empowered by this protective shield, King Indra easily conquered the demon army led by Vritrasura and reclaimed the heavenly kingdom.
The Narayana Kavacham invokes the various manifestations, weapons, and avatars of Lord Sriman Narayana (Matsya, Kurma, Varaha, Narasimha, Vamana, Parashurama, Rama, Krishna, Buddha, Kalki) to protect every direction, time, and limb of the devotee.
