Shri Mahishasura Mardini Stotram (Aigiri Nandini)

Shri Mahishasura Mardini Stotram (popularly known by its opening phrase Aigiri Nandini) is one of the most vibrant, rhythmic, and ecstatic hymns dedicated to Goddess Durga as the slayer of the demon Mahishasura. Attributed to Sri Adi Shankaracharya, this 21-verse stotram captures the supreme power, beauty, and protective grace of the Divine Mother.

The context of this stotram comes from the Devi Mahatmyam (Markandeya Purana). The demon king Mahishasura, who possessed the form of a buffalo, defeated the gods and conquered the heavens. Combining their energies (Tejas), Brahma, Vishnu, Shiva, and all devas manifested Supreme Goddess Durga, equipping Her with their divine weapons.

After a fierce battle, Mother Durga crushed Mahishasura beneath Her lotus foot and pierced him with Her trident. Each verse of this stotram ends with the victorious refrain: "Jaya Jaya He Mahisāsuramardini Ramyakaparḍini Śailasute" ("Victory to You, O Slayer of Mahishasura, who has beautiful matted locks, daughter of the Mountain!").

According to scriptural tradition, daily recitation of Shri Mahishasura Mardini Stotram grants immense blessings:
