Shri Hanuman Dandakam
Introduction
Shri Hanuman Dandakam is a magnificent, rhythmically continuous hymn composed in the majestic Dandakam poetic meter (an extended Sanskrit poetic rhythm having more than 26 syllables per line without standard verse breaks).
Popular across South and Central India, the Hanuman Dandakam opens with the famous line: "Śrī-Añjaneyaṃ Atipāṭalākṣaṃ Kañjanābha-Priyaṃ Karuṇā-Rasa-Pūritākṣam" ("I bow to Sri Anjaneya, red-eyed hero, beloved of Lord Vishnu, whose eyes flow with tears of mercy!").
The Dandakam praises Hanuman's leaping over the ocean, victory over Surasa and Simhika, entry into Lanka, locating Sita Devi in Ashoka Vatika, destroying Akshaya Kumara and Ravana's palace, and bringing Sanjeevani to save Lakshmana.
