Shri Hanuman Chalisa
Introduction
Shri Hanuman Chalisa (literally meaning "Forty Verses to Lord Hanuman") is arguably the most widely recited devotional prayer in Sanatana Dharma. Composed in the 16th century by the saint-poet Goswami Tulsidas in the Awadhi dialect of Hindi/Sanskrit, this hymn consists of two opening couplets (Dohas), forty main quatrains (Chaupais), and one concluding couplet (Doha).
Legend states that Tulsidas composed the Hanuman Chalisa while imprisoned by the Mughal Emperor Akbar in Fatehpur Sikri. When Tulsidas chanted these 40 verses with unswerving devotion, an army of monkeys swarmed the royal court, compelling the emperor to release the saint with honor.
The Hanuman Chalisa praises Mahavira Hanuman as the epitome of strength (Bala), wisdom (Buddhi), courage (Shaurya), and selfless devotion (Bhakti) to Lord Rama. Reciting the Chalisa protects devotees from fear, disease, negative energies, and planetary afflictions.
Benefits of Recitation (Phalashruti)
According to scriptural tradition and Tulsidas's declaration in verse 38, daily recitation of Shri Hanuman Chalisa grants miraculous protection and spiritual evolution:
- Destruction of All Sorrows and Ailments (Nase Rog Hare Sab Pira): Chanting Hanuman's name destroys physical illnesses and mental distress.
- Protection from Evil Forces and Ghosts (Bhoot Pisach Nikat Nahi Ave): Negative vibrations, evil spirits, and black magic cannot approach one who chants Hanuman's name.
