Shri Durga Suktam
Introduction
Shri Durga Suktam is a divine 7-mantra Vedic hymn found in the Mahanarayana Upanishad of the Krishna Yajurveda Taittiriya Aranyaka.
In this Suktam, Goddess Durga is invoked as Agni-Varna (radiant like blazing fire), glowing with divine penance (Tapasa Jvalanti), and praised as the fiery ship (Nava) that carries devotees safely across the turbulent, dangerous ocean of life's difficulties (Durgam/Durita).
The Suktam begins with the celebrated Rigvedic mantra: "Jātavedase Sunavāma Somam-Arātīyato Nidahāti Vedaḥ | Sa Naḥ Parṣad-Ati Durgāṇi Viśvā Nāveva Sindhuṃ Duritā'ty-Agniḥ" ("We press the Soma juice for Agni Jatavedas; may He burn down the ill-intentions of our enemies, and carry us across all dangers like a boat across the sea!").
