The Seven Verses (Durga Saptashloki)

Shri Durga Saptashloki Stotram (literally meaning "The Seven Verses to Goddess Durga") is the distilled essence of the 700 verses of the Shri Durga Saptashati (Chandi Patha) from the Markandeya Purana.

According to scriptural lore, Goddess Parvati asked Lord Shiva how human beings in Kali Yuga—who lack the time or strict discipline required to chant all 700 verses of Durga Saptashati—could easily attain Mother Durga's grace. In response, Lord Shiva extracted seven core verses from the Saptashati and compiled the Durga Saptashloki.

Chanting these seven verses yields the complete spiritual merit (Punya) of performing the entire Chandi Saptashati Patha. It protects devotees from fear, disease, poverty, and negative energies.

According to scriptural tradition, daily recitation of Shri Durga Saptashloki grants immense blessings:

Equivalent to Full Chandi Patha: Grants the spiritual merit of reciting the 700 verses of Durga Saptashati.
Destruction of Fear and Calamities (Durga Prashamanam): Removes acute dangers, fear of death, and enemy threats.
Destruction of Poverty and Illness: Cures diseases and bestows financial prosperity.
Grant of Good Fortune and Peace: Brings family harmony, wisdom, and auspiciousness (Sarva-Mangalam).

Lord Shiva revealed the Durga Saptashloki to Goddess Parvati in response to Her request for a short, effective prayer for human beings in Kali Yuga.

The Durga Saptashloki contains the 7 pillars of Shakta theology:

Mahamaya's Power (Verse 1): Explains how Mahamaya draws even the minds of sages into Her cosmic play.
Durga as Fear-Remover (Verse 2): Remembers Durga to remove fear and grant righteous intellect.
Narayani Stuti (Verses 3–4): The immortal verses of surrender (Sarva Mangala Mangalye) praising Mother as the savior of the distressed.
All-Powerful Form (Verse 5): Invoking Mother as the embodiment of all forms and powers (Sarva-Swarupe Sarveshe).
Curer of Diseases (Verse 6): Mother when pleased destroys all diseases, and Her refugees never face ruin.
Pacifier of Worldly Afflictions (Verse 7): Praying to pacify all three types of afflictions (Adhyatmika, Adhibhautika, Adhidaivika).

Meaning of Phalashruti

Thus ends the Shri Durga Saptashloki Stotram. Whoever recites these seven holy verses with devotion will attain the fulfillment of all righteous desires and enjoy the supreme protection of Goddess Durga.
