Shri Bhaja Govindam (Moha Mudgara)

Shri Bhaja Govindam (originally titled Moha Mudgara, meaning "The Hammer that Shatters Delusion") is one of the most famous, profound, and accessible philosophical hymns composed by Sri Adi Shankaracharya.

The historical context of this hymn is deeply touching. While walking along the streets of Varanasi with his disciples, Shankaracharya saw an old scholar intensely memorizing Sanskrit grammar rules (Dukrin Karane). Filled with deep compassion for the elderly man wasting his precious last years on mere intellectual scholarship rather than seeking God, Shankaracharya spontaneously burst into song: "Bhaja Govindaṃ Bhaja Govindaṃ Govindaṃ Bhaja Mūḍhamate" ("Worship Govinda, worship Govinda, O foolish mind! When death approaches, grammar rules will never save you!").

Hearing Shankaracharya's opening 12 verses (Dvadasa Manjarika Stotra), his fourteen chief disciples each contributed one verse (Chaturdasa Manjarika Stotra), and Shankaracharya concluded with 5 blessing verses—making a total of 31 immortal verses.

According to scriptural tradition and verse 31 of this stotram, daily recitation of Shri Bhaja Govindam grants profound spiritual evolution:
