Shri Aditya Hrudayam Stotram
Introduction
Shri Aditya Hrudayam Stotram (literally meaning "The Heart of the Sun God") is a magnificent Vedic hymn occurring in Sarga 105 of Yuddha Kanda in the epic Valmiki Ramayana. It was revealed by Sage Agastya Maharshi to Lord Shri Ramachandra on the battlefield of Lanka.
The context of this stotram is dramatic. Lord Rama stood exhausted on the battlefield after long fighting with Ravana. Seeing Lord Rama contemplating the battle, Sage Agastya appeared along with the devas and imparted this supreme secret stotram (Sanatana Guhya). Agastya assured Rama that worshipping the Sun God (Aditya) with this hymn guarantees victory over all enemies and eradicates all doubts and fatigue.
After listening to Agastya, Lord Rama sipped water thrice (Achamanam), looked at the Sun God with supreme devotion, chanted the Aditya Hrudayam thrice, and charged into battle to vanquish Ravana.
Benefits of Recitation (Phalashruti)
According to the scriptural declaration of Sage Agastya in Valmiki Ramayana, daily recitation of Shri Aditya Hrudayam grants the following blessings:
