Shri Lalita Sahasranama Stotram

Introduction

Shri Lalita Sahasranama Stotram (literally meaning "The Thousand Names of Divine Mother Lalita") is the supreme masterpiece of Srividya and Shakta literature. It is found in the Lalitopakhyana of the Brahmanda Purana, presented as a sacred dialogue between Lord Hayagriva (an avatar of Lord Vishnu) and Maharshi Agastya.

The history of this stotram is unique and divine. Unlike other Sahasranamams written by a single sage, the 1000 names of Lalita Tripura Sundari were composed by the Eight Vag-Devatas (Vashini, Kameswari, Aruna, Vimala, Jayini, Modini, Sarveswari, and Kaulini) at the explicit command of the Divine Mother Herself.

The stotram praises Sri Lalita as the Supreme Empress (Maha Rajni), seated on the Srichakra throne in Chintamani Griha, surrounded by the nectar of bliss. Reciting the Lalita Sahasranamam grants supreme protection, prosperity, health, and spiritual realization (Atma-Jnana).

Benefits of Recitation (Phalashruti)

According to the divine declaration of Lord Hayagriva in Brahmanda Purana, daily recitation of Shri Lalita Sahasranamam bestows incomparable spiritual and worldly blessings:

  • Attainment of Divine Mother's Grace: Destroys all past karmas and invokes the maternal protection of Sri Lalita Ambika.
  • Srichakra Worship Fruit: Reciting the Sahasranamam is equal to performing millions of Srichakra Pujas and Navavarana Archana.
  • Protection from Diseases and Evil Powers: Cures incurable diseases, shields against black magic, evil spirits, and planetary afflictions.
  • Attainment of Prosperity and Royalty (Rajya Prada): Bestows righteous wealth, high social status, leadership, and domestic harmony.
  • Grant of Wisdom and Speech (Vak Siddhi): Enhances eloquence, poetic brilliance, and deep Vedantic intuition.
  • Supreme Liberation (Moksha): Grants Srividya initiation fruit and leads the soul to Sripura (the abode of Divine Mother).

About the Stotram

Author & Composer

The Lalita Sahasranamam holds a unique place in scriptures. It was composed by the Eight Vag-Devatas (Goddesses of Speech: Vashini and others) created by Divine Mother Lalita. They composed these 1000 names to express the infinite glories of Lalita Ambika in perfect poetic harmony.

This stotram was revealed by Lord Hayagriva (the horse-necked Avatar of Vishnu who presides over supreme wisdom) to Maharshi Agastya (the chief of Siddhas and Srividya practitioner) in the Brahmanda Purana.

Spiritual Significance

Shri Lalita Sahasranamam is the central pillar of Srividya Upasana:

  1. The Four Divine Weapons: Verse 2 and 3 describe Mother's four hands holding:
    • Pasha (Noose) representing attachment/desire (Raga)
    • Ankusha (Goad) representing anger/aversion (Krodha)
    • Ikshu-Kodanda (Sugarcane Bow) representing the mind (Manas)
    • Pancha-Bana (Five Flower Arrows) representing the five senses (Tanmatras)
  2. Srichakra & Kundalini Yoga: The 1000 names systematically describe the awakening of Kundalini energy from Muladhara to Sahasrara chakra, uniting Shiva and Shakti.
  3. Non-Repetitive Perfection: Unlike other Sahasranamams where names may repeat in different contexts, Lalita Sahasranamam contains zero duplicate names—all 1000 names are unique!
